“During the pandemic, South Yorkshire’s Community Foundation gave groups £750,000 to support people in Sheffield. One of those groups was Globalmama, which cooked and delivered over 3,000 meals to people in the Somali and refugee community. In addition, they provided lunches, weekyl shopping and laundry for families with Covid whilst they were isolating, achieved through volunteers in their home kitchens. Globalmama said: “Our activities made a huge difference to people’s lives in an extremely challenging time. Our hot meals supported people financially and reduced depression. The food we delivered was healthy and tasty traditional Somali food, which is very rare here, so it reminded the elderly Somali members of their home and of happier times; many said that it was the only thing keeping them going.” Globalmama also helped people set up WhatsApp to access community support and government guidance."
